Modifications

Modifications are changes that are made to an assignment or lesson for the student because of their disability. This could be as simple as shortening an assignment or as far as to not grade spelling tests and spelling on all assignments. Again, modifications should be specific to the individual, not every child with dyslexia is going to need assignments altered.

Some Modifications

  • Oral exams
  • Oral reports verses written reports
  • Have students turn lined paper vertically for math. Lined paper can be turned vertically to help students keep numbers in appropriate columns while computing math problems.
  • Change response mode. For students who have difficulty with fine motor responses (such as handwriting), the response mode can be changed to underlining, selecting from multiple choices, sorting, or marking. Students with fine motor problems can be given extra space for writing answers on worksheets.
  • Allow peer-note taking. It can be difficult to take notes and comprehend what the teacher is saying, so having someone else take notes for the student could be beneficial. It is also helpful for those with dysgraphia.
  • Grade only for content not spelling or handwriting.
  • For math, take time to reteach if student is struggling to understand concepts.
  • Allow student to type responses.
  • Shorten assignments to focus on mastery of key concepts.
  • Allow student to use a calculator without penalty for math homework and tests.
  • Do not make them read out loud.
