I have Dyslexia
I have chosen not to use spell check for this page of the blog.
I am a great student, a senior in college with a average GPA of 3.5 and I have dyslexia. I am not stupid and I do my best to overcome the obsticals of this disability. I am not great at spelling, recalling information that was spoken, and my reading comprhention is low. But I have made it this far in life not knowing why I had these difficulties and I have done just fine.
I knew I wasn't the best reader most of my life, and my senior year of high school a doctor told me I had a reading disorder. What was it? I didn't know at the time, but this year it became clear doing this project. As I was looking up the symptoms and signs of dyslexia I knew that is what reading disorder was.
My Sympotoms:
- Has particular difficulty with reading and spelling.
- Puts letters and figures the wrong way round.
- Leaves letters out of words or puts them in the wrong order.
- Still occasionally confuses 'b' and 'd' and words such as 'no/on'.
- Still needs to use fingers or marks on paper to make simple calculations.
- Poor concentration.
- Has problems understanding what he/she has read.
- Takes longer than average to do written work.
- Problems processing language at speed.
- Still reads inaccurately.
- Still has difficulties in spelling.
- Needs to have instructions and telephone numbers repeated.
- Confuses places, times, dates.
- Has difficulty with planning and writing essays.
- Has difficulty processing complex language or long series of instructions at speed.
- Frequently misunderstand what others say
- Have difficulty hearing when any background noise is present
- Weak comprehension of something just heard
- Skipping words or lines while reading
- Squinting
- Preference to read in low light
- Rubbing eyes or blinking frequently
- Discomfort reading from monitors and screens.
I have a great difficulty understanding what people are saying to me when I am not familiar with the subject, and I have a hard time formulating questions to ask about the content I learn. I want to learn so much, but when I can't make sense of all the words that are being put together in a sentence wether it is written down or being spoken to me, it makes me want to give up! But, I haven't.
It seems like a great excuse to some people to explain why they don't want to do their work, or why they don't read, but when you have tried so much and failed many times it causes a lot of people to give up. Others might call them lazy, but I know it's because they are tired of feeling like a failure when they try.
If you have a learning disability, don't give up. If you don't have one, I hope you learned something new.
